Monteverdi Marittimo
Monteverdi Marittimo is found in the centre of the Val di Cornia on the southern side of the Metalliferous Hills, grouped on a hill. The landscape and scenic vocation of the zone is marked by an extremely irregular mountainous nature that, accompanied by the hilly backdrop and modelled by the two wide natural amphitheatres formed by the banks of the rivers Sterza and Massera, degrading and descending gradually towards the plains, offers long visual fields for a captivating and fascinating show.
Monteverdi Marittimo sees its historical events closely linked to those of the Abbey of St. Peter in Palazzuolo, founded in 754. Monteverdi is surrounded by a wall and equipped with towers by the monks of the abbey in 1308.
A territory where the scarce activity of man, united with the spread out presence of woods of oaks and cork trees, of chestnut woods and the Mediterranean scrubs, next to the refreshing presence of the numerous water courses and springs, has meant it could conserve its environmental picture intact and full of beauty. |
